“Bless Your Mind” Podcast hosted by Isis Berns.
Generously created by the local Japan, Hokkaido radio station AIR-G’ 80.4FM.
Isis is a volunteer pastor with her husband Johannes Berns at a local Christian church in Hokkaido, Lifehouse Sapporo.
My wonderful friend of over a decade here in Sapporo has taken up Jazz singing, and she is absolutely charming, talented, and gorgeous. I always enjoy watching her sing. Sometimes I even get the honor of singing together with her at church on Sundays. She often sings around Sapporo city at jazz bars and live concerts. One Sunday I asked her, “how was the show last night?” She replied it was a bit more difficult than she imagined, because she was singing songs she was not usually used to singing. It stretched her outside of her comfort zone, and she felt like her skill broadened even further. She even said “I’m glad it got me out of my comfort zone, now I feel like I can do even more.” What a great attitude to have about being stretched beyond your usual limits!
Sometimes we don’t feel comfortable when we’re asked to do things we’re not used to. But in any skill or gifting you might have, you might also already know that the more you exercise it, the better it gets, and when you exercise, it can sometimes stretch you to the point of pain, pressure, and even sweat! The same goes for any skill and gift, whether it be singing or computer programming, writing, sports, anything! If you want to get better, you have to push your limits to go beyond your comfort zone. It might not feel “easy” or “cozy” while you’re in it, but once you finish, you realize you can do even more than ever before!
Is there a skill, gifting, or area in your life that you want to improve in? Are you feeling a little too comfortable where you are in it, and unwilling to step out of your comfort zone to improve?
Try to take a step further today. Stretch yourself further than you have before. Then you’d be surprised after some time to notice, “wow, I can do a lot more now than I could a few months ago!” How awesome would that be?!
